A Day With Grandma

Azalea Brennan excitedly woke up bright and early in the morning and put on one of her favorite dresses. It was pink and purple and had flowers on it.

"You're going to wear that?" asked her mother entering the room. "Isn't it a little fancy for lunch and a movie?"

Azalea shook her head vigorously. "No!" she insisted. "It isn't too fancy. It's my special day with Grandma, and I want to look nice."

Mommy smiled at Azalea. "You really love your Grandma, don't you."

Azalea bobbed her head up and down  as if to say yes.

Just then, the doorbell rang. "Grandma!" Azalea shouted eagerly. She bounded down the steps and opened the door. "Grandma!" she exclaimed throwing herself excitedly into her Grandmother's arms and practically knocking her over.

Grandma laughed at Azalea's excitement. "Hello, my beautiful granddaughter." she stated. "Don't you look lovely in your gorgeous dress."

Azalea gave Mommy an I-told-you-so look. Mommy smiled.

"Shall we go?" asked Grandma. Azalea nodded. She quickly kissed her mother on the cheek and headed out to the car.

In the car, Grandma turned on the radio. She and Azalea sang along to all the songs on the radio. It wasn't an oldie's station either. Grandma knew and liked current singers just as well as she knew and liked singers from her era. She just didn't like rap.

Whenever Azalea stopped singing, Grandma would ask "What's the matter? You don't know this song?" and she would change the station. She also changed the station when they didn't like the song.

"Grandma!" exclaimed Azalea happily after one particularly exuberant round of singing. "You are the coolest!"

Grandma smiled and laughed. "That's me." she replied "Grandma Cool." Azalea smiled and laughed too.

Finally, they arrived at the restaurant. They went in and were quickly shown to a table. After they ordered their food, Grandma turned over her paper placemat, "You be X's." she declared drawing a tic tac tac toe board. They played tic tac toe until they had each won several games. Then, they drew pictures and played word games. When they ran out of room on Grandma's placement, they turned over Azalea's and used hers.

"Grandma," sighed Azalea contently. "You're the most fun."

Grandma nodded. "That's me." she said. "Fun Grandma."

After lunch, they went to the movies, while they waited for the movie to begin, Grandma told Azalea stories. She told her stories about when she was a little girl. She told Azalea stories about her travels. Grandma had been all over the world. Azalea just loved hearing Grandma's stories.

"Grandma." declared Azalea. "You're the best storyteller."

Grandma smiled. "That's me." she agreed. "The storytelling Grandma."

All too soon the day was over, and it was time for Grandma to take Azalea home. Azalea sighed unhappily. She did not want the day to end.

"Thank you so much for spending such a wonderful day with me." stated Grandma when she dropped  Azalea off at her house.

"Thank you, Grandma." replied Azalea. She hugged Grandma tightly. "I love you." she said. "You're the best Grandma in the world."

This time, Grandma didn't say anything. She just hugged Azalea back and smiled.
